Could A Robot Take Over Your Job?
Could Artificial Intelligence take over your job?
What exactly is Artificial Intelligence (AI) & more to the point, can it save us time & money (or just employers) & will the introduction of robots reduce our stress levels or raise them? It all depends on our capacity for change & aesthetics.
AI is an attempt to make a computer think like the human brain. This is some task as inside our bony craniums lives the most complex object in the (known) universe. No one has been completely successful yet. We have plenty of partials in that we have cars that can drive themselves but can’t get rid of the debris young children leave inside or the remains of a Burger King drive-thru. Come to think of it, many humans can’t do that either.
Scientists reckon that by 2050 they will have cracked it & computer brains working inside technically developed bodies will replace humans. That’s only 23 years away! Will you still be of working age then? A study has shown that about 35% of current jobs in the UK are at high risk of computerisation over the following 20 years* How likely is that a robot will replace you in your job? You can find out by visiting http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34066941 neither of my jobs are included so I’m taking that as ‘I’m safe from being robotised.’
Commerce & manufacturing are still being downsized to save companies, organisations & authorities money; they are being computerised in order to streamline processes & reduce the human element that can throw the proverbial spanner in the works like, absenteeism, workers’ rights, pay rises etc. AI can save the companies, organisations & authorities money, but on an individual level, with not monetary income we’ve to rely on dwindling pensions or government handouts. I’ve no doubt that even the thought of redundancy brings on stress to most people.
Below is a link that may restore some justice when you’ve been replaced by a robot, but won’t restore your bank balance.
So what can we do to reduce the impact of AI on our working lives? It would take a tremendous amount of energy to fight ‘progress’ so I’m suggesting we DANCE with it. A concept I re-discovered in my Mindfulness course. We can fight AI; hide from it; run away from it; park it; ignore it or dance with it. Take it for what it is & use it to enhance your life. This goes for most things in life that scare us or threaten us. It’s not easy to do, but the benefits of making a mind-set change from conflict to harmony are a balanced, happy life – which is all we want really, isn’t it?
